Frequently Asked Questions
What is a roadworthy certificate and why do I need one?
A roadworthy certificate proves that your vehicle meets the minimum safety standards required by law. It’s needed when selling a car, transferring registration or re-registering an unregistered vehicle. The inspection checks key safety components like brakes, tyres, suspension, steering and lights to confirm the vehicle is safe to drive on public roads.
How long does a roadworthy certificate last in Queensland?
In Queensland, a roadworthy certificate (also called a safety certificate) is valid for 2 months or 2,000 kilometres—whichever comes first—from the date of issue. If your vehicle isn’t sold or transferred within that timeframe, you’ll need to get a new inspection and certificate issued before proceeding.
What happens if my car fails a roadworthy inspection?
If your car doesn’t pass, the inspector will issue a rejection report listing what needs to be repaired. You have 14 days to complete those repairs and present the vehicle for a second inspection. If you go beyond that window, you’ll need to start the process over with a full inspection.
